Acropolis Walk-a-thon

We are going to be in Athens for a little more than a day as the cruise ship we are taking, the Carnival Vista, departs from Athens. As part of my research for visiting the Acropolis, I came across this blog Archaeology-Travel.com which appears to do an awesome job explaining the process of getting tickets. Most importantly, it explains that for only 10 Euros extra there are 6 sites you can use the tickets at. His pictures were also helpful because now I know what I’m looking for.

And while I’m also thrilled to see that Athens finally has a city pass, it looks like we’re going to just pay the 30 euros and try to do the 6 sites. The 2-day pass wouldn’t be worth it cost-wise for us since we’re only going to be in Athens for a day and don’t plan to use much public transportation.

Our Must-See List:

  • Kerameikos (Museum of Keramiekos, graveyard)
  • Ancient Agora (Temple of Hephaestus, Museum of Ancient Agora)
  • Hadrian’s Library (Statue of Nike)
  • Roman Agora (Tower of the Winds clock)
  • Acropolis (Parthenon, Erechtheion,
  • Slopes of the Acropolis (Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Theatre of Dionysus)
  • Olympieion (Temple of Zeus)

I think our big game plan is to start at the site the furthest from our hotel and make our way back. Either way, we are going to get a workout, that’s for sure!

Restaurants:

We’ve already decided to have a romantic dinner at the Electra Roof Garden in our hotel so that we can dine with a view of the Acropolis all lit up.

Our biggest question that remains…. where can we stop and get a quick bite of some lovely Greek food for lunch?  The neighborhood of Plaka looks so pretty and cute in pictures, I’d love to find a place somewhere along the streets. Hopefully we will have some recommendations when we get back from our trip!

Thanks for the guide, Thomas!

  1. Thank you Lindsay 🙂 You have nailed it, the Athens City Pass is not for you. One tip – September can be hot so get the Acropolis out of the way as early as you can (and take water!), or leave it until the end of the day. You really do not want to be up there when it is too hot all you want to do is sit in the shade.

You will have a wonderful view from the Electra.

    Enjoy your special day!

    1. Great! So glad to hear the view from Electra is nice! And also thanks for the tip about the heat!
