Chichen Itza

It’s a several hour ride from the resorts on the Rivieria Maya, but it is so impressive that it’s worth it. The Maya name “Chichen Itza” means “At the mouth of the well of the enchanter of water.” The entire complex is a large city located between two cenotes (sinkholes), with the temple being the center focal point. Around the temple are many smaller temples including one with the ball arena.  One of the sinkholes is the famous “Sacred Cenote” where the Mayans are believed to have performed sacrifices. Most likely of the losers of the ball game. There is also an observatory where the Mayans looked at the stars and planets. The Mayans were so advanced in their knowledge of astronomy that they built their pyramid so that the each solstice, the sun would line up overhead so that exactly 1/2 of the pyramid was in the light and the other half in the shadow. Someday I’d love to be there to see that!
